Look for these new brews
By Joey Redner

The deluge of new brews keeps pouring into Florida.

Miller distributor JJ Taylor has been flirting with smaller craft breweries for a while now but has recently cemented distribution deals with Georgia's Terrapin Beer Co., a welcome addition to Florida's burgeoning craft beer scene.

Two Terrapin beers are available year round. The Rye Pale Ale is one of the best pale ales made in America and it has the hardware to prove it, including a Great American Beer Festival gold medal. That's quite a feat considering the staggering number of entries in the pale ale category. The other year-round offering is the easy drinking cream ale, Terrapin Golden Ale.

Terrapin also brews several seasonal beers. Rye Squared contains double the malt and hops of the Rye Pale Ale, hence the name, and is released in the spring. Summer brings the All-American Imperial Pilsner, which is indeed made from all American-grown hops, malt and yeast.

Fall ushers in the Big Hoppy Monster, which is a sort of hybrid of Imperial IPA and amber ale that has a massive caramel malt backbone and an equally enormous hop presence. The final offering is a winter seasonal with the completely innocent name of Wake-n-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout. This brew contains chocolate and coffee notes galore along with the smooth creamy texture imparted by the oatmeal and yet has only 8.1 percent alcohol by volume (fairly low for an Imperial stout by U.S. standards). It's that rare beer that offers huge flavor and the opportunity to have more than one without needing a nap.

If you are the greedy type and one new brewer isn't enough, take heart. Unique Beers, the distributor who brings us treats from Dogfish Head and Avery Brewing, have added Clipper City Brewing out of Baltimore to their portfolio. Clipper City has been brewing since 1995, but its founder, Hugh Sisson, has been brewing in the Baltimore area much longer. Hugh successfully lobbied to make brew pubs legal in Maryland in 1987 and became the head brewer at the first brew pub in Baltimore in 1989.

In Florida only the Heavy Seas lineup will be available. These nautically themed brews include Holy Sheet, a 9 percent abv abbey dubbel, which is the newest offering from Clipper City. Peg Leg is an imperial stout that plays up the fruit flavors as much as the roasted malt notes. Red Sky at Night is an American take on a Belgian saison that comes across more like a Belgian ale, complete with ample candy sugar notes.

Small Craft Warning is a strong European-style lager that mixes elements of bock and pilsner. Winter Storm is a rotating seasonal.

Unique Beers is also distributing Holy Mackerel Golden Spiced Ale. It's a strong Belgian ale brewed at the Florida Beer Company in Melbourne, to the recipe of an award-winning Florida home brewer. All of the aforementioned brews are available in 12-ounce bottles.
