Radio Moscow

With Poetry N' Lotion, Mes Music and DJs Cub and 2Critical

FRIDAY New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. 9 p.m. $7. (813) 248-4969.

The three guys in Ames, Iowa's, Radio Moscow aren't as old as they sound, and their stuff should appeal to folks who enjoy the swampy rock of Creem and Blue Cheer. These boys bust out bluesy licks, thick bass lines and kick-butt beats. It's as if they stepped out of a time machine from 1972. They impressed Black Keys guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach so much he decided to produce and engineer their self-titled CD. Adding to the howling psychedelic mishmash are Tampa's unholy mess o' vintage flair and improvisation, Poetry 'N Lotion, and newish hip-hop artist Mes Music, which consists of MC Chris Wood, a.k.a. Mes; backup Brad Askew, a.k.a. Crack Morris; and DJ Sowsan Karim, a.k.a. Sows Def. "I've been involved in two groups locally, Johnny Utah (hip-hop) and Johnny Utah and the Funk Bastard (live band hip-hop/rock)," Mes says. "Now as a solo artist, I feel I can express my craziness without having to worry about how it makes someone else look."

Business Casual

FRIDAY 10 p.m. Kelly's Pub, 206 N Morgan St., Tampa. Free. (813) 228-0870.

Business Casual employs DJs Moss Brother, Astrospec and Mr. Attention - and sometimes an extra mystery temp - on the tables. They spin "dusty, dirty old records and 45s of some of the supreme heard and unheard works from the late 1960s, early 1970s soul (such as what's pictured here), funk and jazz," says Michael Martz, a.k.a. Mr. Attention.

Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets

SATURDAY 10 a.m.-2 p.m. , Morning Market, 100-200 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Free. (727) 455-4921.

Only a couple of weeks left of St. Pete's Saturday morning market. This is a great Saturday to go because you can also catch Rebekah Pulley, who performs Americana, folk and pop tunes with sincerity and subtle power. She's backed by her full band for this event, so check 'em out between shopping for fruits and vegetables, gourmet cheeses, baked goods and flowers.

Alchemy Fest

Featuring Auditorium (pictured), Soulfound, The Brentford Sound, The Human Condition, Have Gun Will Travel

SUNDAY 2-6 p.m. Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. All ages. $6. (813) 971-0666.

Joran Slane, front man for Auditorium and founder of the Southeast Music Alliance, explains in an e-mail to tbt* his personal take on the event named after his daughter: "Alchemy Fest is basically my daughter Alchemy's birthday party (this being the second annual). But I will continue to program and host it every year until she doesn't think it's cool anymore (probably around the time she's 12 or 13 - or when she wants U2 to be the headliner)! ... And, really it's an excuse once a year for the bands with families (Auditorium, Human Condition, Rebekah Pulley, Have Gun, etc.) to hangout in the daylight and let the kids see their parents play - which rarely ever seems to happen." Does the event raise money for SMA? "Actually, last year, all the money we made went to the godd--- clown. This year, we're going to try to pay the bands. ;-)"

Ronny Elliott's 60th Birthday

SATURDAY 8 p.m. Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $10, $13. (813) 971-0666.

Elliott is to the Tampa roots music scene what Obi-Wan Kenobi is to the Rebel Alliance: respected, admired but somewhat of an enigma. He's carved out a prolific music career, touring Europe and playing locally and nationally, sometimes sharing stages with the Allman Brothers, Canned Heat, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. He also spent some time playing with southern rock heroes the Outlaws. Of the quotes provided by WMNF DJ Flee, this one from Time Out London says it all: "His music aches, yearns, rolls and burns. ... the ol' velvet rambler could hold you in thrall just spinning tales." Come raise a toast to Ronny's big six-o, and maybe buy one of his new double-live CDs. Community radio station WMNF-FM 88.5 presents this sure-to-be-fun birthday/CD release shindig. And there's free cake.
