Meet... D'Visitors

Handout photo
D'Visitors take influence from around the world and perform on both sides of the Howard Frankland bridge.

Here to stay: Nikki Ferrara, 32, lead vocals; Brian Woeller, 28, guitar; Mugabe Tenn, 29, bass; Kenny Poland, 37, trumpet; Jasper Hazenberg, 30, saxophone; Brian Deeds, 32, xylophone; Keenan Hercules, 22, drums.

Drops in occasionally: Michael Mendolusky a.k.a. DJ Blenda, 33, drums.

One Bay: All eight members live on the Tampa side of the bridge, but the group has penetrated Hillsborough and Pinellas counties with equal aplomb. "If you're good on one side of the bay, but you're not good on the other, then you're not good," Tenn said.

One World: D'Visitors plays global ambassador with beats and harmonies that include reggae, Latin, jazz and Afro-pop. Tenn hails from Jamaica. Hazenberg represents Holland. Woeller, Tenn ribs affectionately, " is from outer space."

"All of our sounds are cultured sounds in different ways. It's more about the personality. It's how we come together," says Mendolusky. " We have the same ideals and we want to open the gates to bring more music. Punk rock, hip-hop, we wanna fuse everything."

The group claims influences ranging from Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Fela Kuti, who was heavily immersed in the 1970s Black Power movement, to pianist Burt Bacharach, who handled production and arrangement for Marlene Dietrich in the 1950s.

One Love: As a founding member of music and art collective Gwan Massive, D'Visitors fuels the local scene with more than their driving rhythms. "Gwan Massive is a family," Woeller says. "It's promotional, but it's a promotional family." The family includes musicians and DJs Ran Mecca, The Ruckus, Slopfunkdust, Breakdown and Tribal Style, amongst others. Gwan Massive also is responsible for the naughty new art series at Czar Bar in Ybor City, Dirty but Sophisticated.

Move to the Groove: D'Visitors gets everyone from middle-aged slicksters to crunchy college kids bopping on the dance floor. Hit them up at the Tampa Museum of Art (7-9 p.m. June 16). Download tracks online at www.dvisitors.com and www.myspace.com/dvisitors.
